Another season of Eiken testing just finished. 

Although our focus is not on test-taking, it’s always fun to celebrate students passing, and seeing their scores.  

This year we challenged our 13 year old daughter to take Eiken 1.  She loves reading, and has advanced language skills for her age. 

Living in Japan, she often feels like a loser because her scores and ability to communicate at school are lower than her classmates.  So we felt it would be good for her to challenge herself in something that she is good at.  

We did a little practice with her, and talked with her about different strategies and topics to be familiar with.  But mostly we left it up to her to prepare.  

After getting the test results back, we were happy that she passed, but we were surprised that her lowest score was on the speaking part.  That part of the exam was more difficult than we anticipated. 

The topics and format for the Eiken 1 interview can make it a real challenge for younger students, even though they are a native speaker with advanced language skills and can talk all day long about a variety of things.

英検の２次試験がおわり、結果がオンライン上ででました。私たちの学校のレッスンでは普段はテストに焦点をあてていませんが、生徒さんが英検に受かり、スコアを見せてくれるのはうれしいです。（希望者には対策講座や、プライベートで学校のテスト対策をしています。）

今年は中１の娘に英検１級を受けないか、話を持ちかけました。英語の読書が大好きで、ネイティブの中でも年齢を上回る言語スキルがあります。日本に住んでいると、学校での成績や能力が他の子より低く、いつも劣等感があるため、自分が得意とする分野でチャレンジしてみることはいいと思いました。

いっしょに少し練習し、いろんなこつやトピックについて教えました。しかし、ほとんど本人に任せていました。テストの結果を知り、無事受かったことに喜びましたが、スピーキングのスコアが一番低かったのには驚きました。予想した以上に試験は難しいものでした。

１級の面接のトピックや形式は、ネイティブの子供達にとっても大きな壁となるでしょう。国語（英語）に秀で、いろんな話題について一日中話せる子にとっても。

（余談）松山では１級の２次は受けられず、広島まで行かなければなりませんでした。AICJ中学・高等学校で行われました。午後にあったので前泊せずにすんだこと、隣にイオンモールがあったことは良かったです。集合時間より１５分前に行ったら、もう席の９割は埋まってしまっていました。先着順だったので、２時間は待たされた気がします。もっと早く行けば良かったと後悔しました。ご参考までに。
